Costa Blanca, also known as the white coast has more then 200 km of coastline along the Mediterranean Sea in the province of Alicante in Spain. She stretches on the South-East coast of Spain from the city of Dénia in the North, from where the Costa del Azahar starts to Pilar de la Horada in the South, after which you enter the Costa Calida. The name ‘Costa Blanca’ was invented when people needed a promotional name for the first airline between London and Valencia in 1957. Today, the Costa Blanca has a well developed tourist industry and has become the most popular holiday destination in Spain for Northern Europeans. The Costa Blanca North and the Costa Blanca South are totally different.
Th Moors invaded Spain in 711 BC and occupied the region around Alicante by 718 BC. They occupied and shaped the country from the region for almost 400 years and introduced irrigation systems and plants like orange trees, peach trees and almond trees. The terraces you see along the hills throughout the region are also a Moorish inheritance. It took Ferdinand and Isabella untill 1492 to completely drive out the Moors when they gained control over Granada.
